Navigating Difficult Emotions

Description

Too often when we feel difficult emotions, we want to push them down and pretend they don't exist.  When we do, they become rough waters in our life and usually are exhibited in compulsions, need to control circumstances and people or other unhealthy behaviors.  This four week class will provide participants with tools to navigate the rough waters of difficult emotions -- anger, sadness, fear and shame. 

Objectives

To enable students to identify and manage the difficult emotions of anger, sadness, fear and shame.

Content

Session one:

Introduction to emotions

Discussion of Anger

  • How to identify
  • How to adjust thinking
  • How to meet the need to express anger in a healthy way

Session Two:

Discussion of Sadness

  • How to identify
  • How to adjust thinking
  • How to meet the need to express sadness in a healthy way

Session three:

Discussion about fear

  • How to identify
  • How to adjust thinking
  • How to meet the need to express fear in a healthy way

Session Four:

Discussion about Shame

  • How to identify
  • How to adjust thinking
  • How to meet the need to express shame in a healthy way
