Course Title
Opening A Small Family Care Home


The course will prepare students to open a small adult family care home with six or fewer residents. The class will cover how to identify the right property, licensure procedures and other policies and procedures. Regulations, resident assessments, care plans, LHPS, required records and medication management will be discussed. Also covered are activities, food service, staff training and qualifications. One session will also cover the preparation of a marketing plan and budgets. The course prepares participants to take the N.C. test for administrators. Note: This course is not the Assisted Living Administrator Training course.


To prepare students on all aspects of opening a small adult family care home of six or fewer residents. It also prepares students to take the N.C. test for administrators. 


First Session:  (5 hours)

Panel of Family Care Home Administrators

        Discussions on finding right property.

  • Size and required property features, zoning, building codes, sanitation and fire and safety.

Construction and/or plan review submitted to Raleigh

Developing policies and procedures

  •  Outline of what policies and procedures need to be covered
  •  Medication policies

Licensure Process

          DSS and their involvement and preferred procedures

           What needs to be submitted with application

  •   Menus approved by registered dietitian
  •   Copy of pharmacy contract
  •   Sample of monthly activity calendar
  •   Copy of approved policies and procedures
  •   Fire and safety inspection report
  •   Health inspection report
  •   Building inspection report
  •   Medication policies
  •   Proof of required furnishing, linens, dishes, and small-wares
  •   Copy of Resident Care Assessment manual
  •   Copy of LHPS Assessment form

Second Session:  (5 hours)

Review the regulations and also review of resident rights

Medication management (2 hours)
