Course Title
Kayaking for Beginners

Description

From local reservoirs, a mountain rapid to the sea kayaking is a great way to explore the outdoors. This course is taught at one of our local lakes and is designed to teach the basic skills of flat water kayaking. Topics include forward and reverse strokes, sweeps and self-rescue skills. Sea kayakers welcome in this course. Dress to get wet!

Objectives

  • Demonstrate the safe and correct handling of the kayak
  • Demonstrate rescue skills

Content

  1. Class 1
    • Orientation
    • Parts of kayak, carrying a kayak, getting in and out of a kayak
    • Eskimo rescue, wet exit, and variety of strokes
    • River reading, safety considerations, kayak polo
  2. Class 2
    • Review from previous day
    • Demonstrate how to load a kayak into a car
    • Rescues-self rescue, eddy turns, peel-out, ferrying, maneuvering on class I and II whitewater
    • Practice all strokes and skills on two mile kayak trip
